Xmas and New Year in Mumbai | Mumbai

Christmas Season is here again; the weather may not be as nippy and cold as we’d have liked it to be, but ChristmasChristmas nativity figurines celebrations are on with the same gusto as always. And while many are taking off out of Mumbai for a quiet celebration amidst nature, some are staying back in the city. But worry not; even a city Christmas can be made just as special. MetroMela tells you how.

Christmas Mass
One of the first places to remember and visit for Christmas is St. Michael’s Church at Mahim. It is one of Mumbai’s oldest churches, and every Christmas it takes on an extra special air. Its Christmas Mass is a large, extravagant affair and devotees of all faiths are welcome. Even for your pre-Christmas preparations, St. Michael’s Church is a place you must visit; especially on Wednesdays when the Novena takes place. On the days of the Novena (every Wednesday), the pavement outside the church is converted into a market where you’ll find everything you need for Christmas: hymn books, clay figurines for cribs, candles, music CDs and the works.

Every Church has its own special Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve; some of the other churches you could visit in Mumbai are Mount Mary’s Basilica at Bandra, Holy Name Cathedral at Colaba, St. Thomas’s Cathedral at Fort, and Gloria Church at Byculla.

Christmas and New Year shopping
Christmas is that time of the year when all the streets are busy with merry shoppers buying decorations, clothes and of course gifts for loved ones. For the best and the most fun shopping experience, we suggest you hit the streets: Colaba is a great place to buy gifts and antiques, and even clothes from. Hill Road too is a great place for reasonable clothes and great decorations. Do drop in at Cheap Jack for some of the coolest decorations and party themes.

Bandra also has some great bakeries where you’ll find your authentic rum cakes and plum cakes for Christmas. Do read our guide on Bakeries in Bandra for more. Speaking of good cakes, Kyani Bakery, Oven Fresh, Merwan’s, La Patisserie and Theobroma are the places where you can get the best cakes. They even custom make cakes on orders placed in advance.

New Year Parties
New Year 2010Mumbai has no dearth of lavish parties. Perhaps one of the biggest parties of the year will happen at Essel World. Called Big Nite 2010, the party will be an extravagant affair with DJ Notorious taking the stage with his electrifying mixes. There will be live music bands, clowns, jugglers, fire eaters, face painters, tattoo artists, hair braiders, mehendi artistes, bangle makers and fortune tellers amongst others. Also, there will be a magnificent fireworks display to welcome the New Year. And don’t forget the food; the parks will be laden with an endless array of food, including a whole range of international cuisines.

In addition, there will be grand New Year parties at Zenzi, China House, The Renaissance, Hard Rock Café, La Brasserie, Blue Frog and Celini. So go on, take your pick and have a great New Year.
